Examination Process

Your Path to Certification

The ABSS certification examination process ensures that only the most qualified spine surgeons achieve certification. To achieve ABSS certification, follow our step-by-step guide to ensure you meet the necessary requirements and are prepared for the examinations.

Step 1 - Seek Approval from the Credentials Committee

To begin the certification process, submit your application and accompanying materials for review by the Credentials Committee. Once approved, you can proceed to apply for the Part I Written Examination. Please send your application to info@americanboardofspinesurgery.org

Step 2 - Apply for Part I

After receiving approval from the Credentials Committee, complete and submit your application for the Part I Written Examination. The application form can be found at the bottom of our examination handbook.

Step 3 - Schedule your Written Exam

Upon application approval, you can schedule your Part I Written Examination. Exams are given twice a year, allowing flexibility in planning. Please contact us for the available dates and application deadlines.

Step 4 - Request Application for Part II

Once you have passed the Part I Written Examination, request the application for the Part II Oral Examination from the ABSS Executive Office.

Step 5 - Apply for Part II

Submit your application for the Part II Oral Examination after receiving your Part I results and completing the necessary requirements. Please send your application to info@americanboardofspinesurgery.org

Step 6 - Schedule your Oral Exam

Finally, schedule your Part II Oral Examination. The Oral Exam is conducted twice a year as a virtual meeting. Please contact us for the available dates and application deadlines.

  • Start the Examination Process

    Before you can apply for Part I of the examination, you must be approved by the Credentials Committee. Please attach your materials to the following cover letter and send your application to info@americanboardofspinesurgery.org. Once approved, you can apply for the application using the form at the bottom of the page.

  • Part 1 – Written Examination

    The Part I Written Examination assesses your foundational knowledge in spine surgery. It covers essential concepts and ensures you possess the theoretical understanding required for certification.

  • Part 2 – Oral Examination

    The Part II Oral Examination evaluates your clinical decision-making and practical skills. This exam involves case studies and scenario-based questions to test your hands-on expertise.

Written Examination

$950.00 Fee

Requirements

    • Completion of a twelve-month approved spine fellowship program or equivalent resident training.
    • Full and unrestricted medical license or full-time practice in the U.S. federal government.
    • Two letters of recommendation from qualified authorities familiar with your work.

To begin the certification process, submit your cover letter and accompanying materials for review by the Credentials Committee. After receiving approval, complete and submit your application for Part I.

Oral Examination

$1,500.00 Fee

Requirements

    • Passed Part I Written Examination.
    • Current certification by the American Board of Neurosurgery or Orthopaedic Surgery.
    • Two additional letters of recommendation if more than one year has passed since Part I.
    • Two years of active spine surgery practice.
